Amebo9ja Artiste Of The Month: Cuppy – My Jollof Is Better

Our Amebo9ja Artiste of the Month for  July is the stunningly beautiful Florence Ifeoluwa Otedola popularly known by her stage name DJ Cuppy.

The King’s College graduate of Business & Economics could have easily been killing it in the boardroom without a doubt but opted to venture into music starting out as a disc jockey. Besides playing at high-profile gigs around the world, DJ Cuppy was opportune to intern with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation while studying music at New York University in 2015.

She took things a notch higher when she played in some African cities during her ‘Cuppy takes Africa’ tour.

It is not easy making a name for yourself in an industry that is male-dominated especially being a disc jockey. Notwithstanding the odds, DJ Cuppy pushed through the hurdles to make a name for herself.

While still actively playing as a DJ, Cuppy fantasized about growing her crafts beyond pushing buttons on a turntable to actually producing songs and singing and went for it. That idea has taken her into lots of unfamiliar territories as far as the music business is concerned.

Late 2017, DJ Cuppy teamed up with hot boy Tekno for her first debut single ‘Green Light’. The aftermath of that experiment was a hit song that serenaded the airwaves as the end of year festivities came closer.

From ‘Greenlight’ she went on to release songs like ‘Vybe’, ‘Werk’, ‘Abena’, ‘Gelato‘ and most recently ‘Jollof on the Jet‘. With each of these releases, she has worked with music stars like Sarkodie, Skuki, Ceeza Milli, Kwesi Arthur, Zlatan, Rayvanny, Rema etc.

Since she pushed her craft beyond playing on the turntable to being a singer and a record producer, DJ Cuppy has suffered severe backlashes, especially for her music. People have openly told her to quit trying to sing or making music and stick to being an actual DJ. In summary, she has been labelled as yet another privileged kid with no actual talent but a family name and lots of money behind.

She has been trolled and trashed but she just hasn’t given up on herself.

At the moment, DJ Cuppy has grown a thick skin and forged ahead against all odds to be where she is at the moment.

One of her biggest stories would be signing a massive deal with Apple Music to become the first host of the Afrobeats radio show Africa Now. On the weekly Sunday radio show DJ Cuppy shares the best of Afrobeats tunes with the rest of the world. She also educates the audience about the rising music genre in the global scene.

In a couple of weeks Cuppy would be putting out her debut album titled ‘Original Copy‘ and it is something to look out for. According to her, a lot of work has gone into making her debut music project worthwhile and memorable.

Before the album release, she joined UK-based record label Platoon where the ‘Original Copy’ album would be published and distributed.

Already, the album cover art and track-list are out there; 12 tracks, 14 artistes holding lots of surprises.

Despite being a privileged kid, Cuppy has worked her bit to be where she is at the moment. She knows there is room for improvement in her craft and she is all about getting better at it.

The journey hasn’t been all rosy for Cuppy but she keeps it original and sometimes that’s what the art is all about, being an Original Copy.
