Football season is back in session on All American, the CW’s show about the sport based on the life of former New York Giants player Spencer Paysinger.

Last night’s premiere episode titled “Ludacrismas” was shocking for viewers as — and spoilers past this point — Spencer (Daniel Ezra) unfortunately broke up with Olivia (Samantha Logan) so she could focus on her journalistic pursuits. Speaking of her journalism career, Olivia attempted to investigate the GAU football team with her dad, Billy (Taye Diggs), which proved to be really incriminating for Coach Garrett (Sean Carrigan). On the other relationship front, Simone (Geffri Hightower) believed there might be something going on between Layla (Greta Onieogou) and Jordan (Michael Evans Behling), who definitely appeared to have sexual tension since their kiss, while Keisha (Netta Walker) wondered what was going on with Cam (Mitchell Edwards). Meanwhile, Clay (Deric Augustine) and Layla were still on rocky terms as Clay refused to hand over control of Layla’s dad’s record label to her. Coop (Bre-Z) was still Coop, though, drama-free and trying to pursue a career in criminal justice. The episode culminated with Spencer and the rest of the gang hosting a party at the beach house on “Christmas Eve-Eve.”

Coop has an interview with the professor whose law course she hopes to audit and it goes badly. Jordan and Spencer warn JJ that he’s slacking off. Jordan admits to JJ that he’s with Layla. Olivia finds Eric, an assistant coach who may have something to hide. Billy knows him and insists that he be the one to talk to him. Spencer is overdoing it with Alicia, “Pretty Woman” style. Darius screwed up on filing the briefs and Preach temporarily loses custody of Amina as a result. Layla asks JJ for help with Jordan. Coop puts herself back on Preach’s case. Spencer gives the roses Alicia is allergic to to Billy for Laura. Coop takes another shot at the professor with her real life story and gets to audit his class. JJ attempts to convince Asher of his rededication. Alicia just wants a casual night with Spencer, even after he admits to sleeping with Olivia. Eric says injuring other teams’ players was his idea but Garrett took it to another level. Billy convinces him to be interviewed by Olivia. JJ blows off his workout for a flipflop party and Asher sees him. Layla says she’s protecting their relationship from the Vortex. Garrett resigns because he found out about Olivia’s article before it ran.

However, given Spencer’s mom (Karimah Westbrook) and brother (Jayln Hall) are reportedly moving away with his mom’s fiance (Lamon Archey), her role in the All American canvas seems to be a little more reduced.
