Biz Markie, the rapper best known for the hit song “Just a Friend,” died on Friday, July 16. He was 57.

According to UsMagazine, the musician’s death followed complications from diabetes, which he suffered from for more than a year. He died in a hospital in Baltimore with his wife, Tara Hall, by his side.

Markie (born Marcel Theo Hall) was previously hospitalized in 2020 due to his type 2 diabetes.

The DJ released his debut album, Goin’ Off, in 1988. “Just a Friend” dropped in 1989 and went on to become a Top 40 hit.

“We are grateful for the many calls and prayers of support that we have received during this difficult time,” a rep for the rapper told TMZ on Friday. “Biz created a legacy of artistry that will forever be celebrated by his industry peers and his beloved fans whose lives he was able to touch through music, spanning over 35 years. He leaves behind a wife, many family members and close friends who will miss his vibrant personality, constant jokes and frequent banter.”
