The Fearway (2023) Review

A young couple embark on what should be a fun romantic road trip… But their plans are quickly derailed when a mysterious being follows them, abuses, and harasses them. As the situation worsens, they desperately seek help from anyone they can… But who can they trust? Will they reach safety, or will death come fast?

Sarah (Shannon Dalonzo), the female lead, does nothing but challenge and moan at her older husband-to-be Michael (Justin Gordon) during their road trip. She’s so annoying that one hopes that she chokes very soon and that her future spouse finds someone nicer, someone that doesn’t chide at his every word and action.

Fortunately, Sarah calms down when she realises that she doesn’t have all the answers to every situation that pops up after all and then THE FEARWAY settles down into an agreeable blend of elements from DUEL, JEEPERS CREEPERS and vintage episodes of THE TWILIGHT ZONE.

Director Robert Gajic and writer Noah Bessey have concocted a fast-paced, well-produced and photographed movie that remains enjoyable throughout regardless of familiarity with the plotting and the initial aggravation of spending too much screentime with the central couple.

There’s a very brief cameo from THE EXORCIST’s Eileen Dietz and a solid turn from one of our favourite actors Simon Phillips – as The Manager – who excels in one of the best flicks that his gorgeous being has graced us with in a short while.

Yes, it’s the third movie in a short period that again sees a couple going around in circles when attempting to get somewhere else. And yes, there also nods towards the likes of Adrian Lyne’s sublime JACOB’S LADDER and 2003’s IDENTITY but it’s hard to deny that with THE FEARWAY, familiarity does NOT breed contempt but instead adds to a fun watch that’s worth suffering the film’s first twenty minutes for.
