The Irregular at Magic High School is a Japanese light novel series written by Tsutomu Satō and illustrated by Kana Ishida. The story takes place in an alternate history of Japan, where magic has been scientifically studied since the 19th century with the invention of the steam engine as well as other technologies.

However, after World War II, society rejected this technology for a more traditional lifestyle. Now students with magical powers must attend prestigious schools to learn how to control their abilities and use them wisely or risk being hunted down as dangerous individuals known as “Irregulars.”
